The New Balance 1906 is a family of sneakers built on the same retro running base, with each version getting its own upper. Where does the New Balance 1906 come from?
It all starts with a running shoe that New Balance launched in 2009. When that model returned in 2022, it sold so well that the brand began building new versions on top of it. Each variant was given its own letter after the number.
One of the first was the 1906D from the Protection Pack, with frayed, cut-away edges. The 1906A, 1906L and 1906U followed, among others. That is how a single archive model grew into a full series with very different personalities.
The 1906 variants
- 1906A: an upper of floating panels with raw edges, which gives the shoe depth. Underfoot there are ABZORB pods in the heel and N-ergy cushioning.
- 1906L: a laceless penny loafer on a running sole. That makes it the only 1906 you can also wear with tailored trousers or a smarter outfit.
- 1906U: a utility version with reflective details and an extra-padded collar.
- 1906D: the Protection Pack version, with overlays that look as if they have been torn off.
What they share is the recognisable layered sole with visible cushioning elements on the side. The difference lies in the upper: from technical and sporty to almost formal.

What is the difference between the New Balance 1906 and the 1906R?

How does the New Balance 1906 fit?
Most 1906 variants fit true to size, so you can go by your usual New Balance size. The 1906L is a little different: without laces you cannot tighten the heel, so it may slip if you have narrow heels. If that applies to you, consider half a size down for the loafer. With a high instep, stick to your own size instead.
