990v4
The New Balance 990v4 is the fourth version of the 990, the running shoe with which New Balance has built its reputation for quality since 1982. The v4 came out in 2016 and, especially in grey suede, became the textbook example of the dad shoe. The history of the New Balance 990
The first 990 appeared in 1982 as New Balance’s technical flagship. It took a long time before a successor arrived, but after that the versions followed one another more regularly. The 990v3 from 2012 introduced the ENCAP sole, which returns in the later versions too.
The 990v4 followed in 2016. It kept the suede and US production, got a slightly slimmer design and more ventilation. The grey version in particular became the face of the normcore trend. In 2019 the 990v5 took over, but New Balance later brought the v4 back in its original grey.
Design and technology
The upper is made of pigskin suede with mesh, with the recognisable N on the side and reflective details. The midsole uses ENCAP: a soft foam core surrounded by a firmer rim that supports the inside of the foot. Underneath sits a durable rubber outsole. The result is a sneaker that feels sturdy and stable without being hard.
Colours and collaborations
The 990v4 is mainly known in neutral tones, with suede and mesh kept in the same colour family. Within the Made in USA line, where Teddy Santis has been creative director since 2021, versions in warmer and bolder colours appeared too. Designers such as Joe Freshgoods also gave the model their own twist.
