Air Jordan 1
The Air Jordan 1 is the sneaker that started the partnership between Michael Jordan and Nike in 1985, and it is still the most important model of Air Jordan. With its high collar, leather upper and bold colour blocking, you recognise it instantly. You can wear it as a High, Mid or Low, and new colorways appear every year.
The history of the Air Jordan 1
Michael Jordan signed with Nike in 1984, in his first season with the Chicago Bulls. Peter Moore designed the first signature shoe, which hit stores in 1985. Moore also drew the Nike Dunk that same year, which explains the resemblance between the two shoes. The classic ‘Chicago’ and ‘Bred’ colours date from that first year.
The AJ1 carries the ‘Wings’ logo; the Jumpman logo only arrived in 1988 on the Air Jordan 3. The first retro releases came out in 1994, and since the 2000s the Jordan 1 has been a fixture of sneaker culture. Collaborations with Off-White, Travis Scott and Union LA, among others, have made it even more sought-after in recent years.
Low, Mid or High?
- High – closest to the 1985 original. Versions with ‘OG’ in the name follow the original shape and colour scheme.
- Mid – a slightly lower shaft and often its own colorways that you will not see as a High.
- Low – the lowest version, easy to wear in summer or with shorts.
Popular Air Jordan 1 colorways
The most searched-for Jordan 1s on WOOVIN right now are Lows from the Travis Scott collaboration, recognisable by the backwards Swoosh:
- Jordan 1 Low OG SP Travis Scott ‘Medium Olive’ – olive green with black and off-white.
- Jordan 1 Low OG SP Travis Scott ‘Tropical Pink’ – off-white with pink accents.
- Jordan 1 Low OG SP Travis Scott ‘Shy Pink’ – a softer shade of pink.
- Jordan 1 Low OG SP Travis Scott ‘Velvet Brown’ – dark brown with black.
What is the difference between the Air Jordan 1 and the Air Jordan 4?
The Jordan 1 is slim and simply built, with a thin sole and little padding. The Air Jordan 4 from 1989 has a thicker sole with visible Air, mesh panels and more cushioning. If you want a classic, clean look, go for the 1; for more comfort on long walks, the 4 is the better choice.
How does the Air Jordan 1 fit?
The Air Jordan 1 fits true to size as a High, Mid and Low, so you can order your usual Nike size. The leather feels a bit stiff around the ankle and toe when new, but softens after a few wears. If you have wide feet, half a size up gives more room. In smaller sizes, watch the difference between GS (kids’ sizes) and adult sizes.
