F50
The adidas F50 started out as a fast football boot and is now also a line of lifestyle sneakers, with models such as the Megaride F50 and collaborations with Bad Bunny and Coca-Cola. They combine the futuristic design of 2000s football with a comfortable sole for everyday wear. On WOOVIN you will mainly find these sneaker versions, not the studded football boots.
The history of the adidas F50
adidas introduced the F50 in 2004, just before the European Championship, as a lighter and faster alternative to the Predator. The name refers to 1954, the year West Germany became world champions in adidas boots with exchangeable studs. A key feature of the first F50 was a flap over the laces, for a larger and cleaner striking surface.
Later came the F50 Tunit, whose parts you could swap, and the F50 adizero, which Lionel Messi wore for years. In 2015 adidas temporarily stopped the line, but in 2024 the F50 returned to the pitch. Around the same time adidas translated the design into sneakers for the street.
Design: from football boot to sneaker
The best-known lifestyle version is the Megaride F50. It borrows the ‘Spider’ structure of the F50+ football boot: a plastic cage over the mesh upper that keeps the foot in place. Underneath is a Megaride sole with visible cushioning elements, a cushioning technology from adidas running shoes of the 2000s.
Besides the Megaride F50 there are other variants, such as the F50 Walkable, the F50 Formotion and the F50 Ghost Sprint. They share the technical, glossy look, with lots of metallic shades, mesh and contrasting details.
Popular adidas F50 colorways
With the F50 it is mainly collaborations and metallic colours that stand out. These pairs are currently getting the most views on WOOVIN:
- F50 Formotion x Sp5der ‘Silver Metallic’: silver with black, in collaboration with the streetwear label Sp5der.
- F50 Ghost Sprint x Bad Bunny ‘Dark Marine’: dark navy with light blue accents.
- F50 Megaride x Coca-Cola ‘White Ice Green’: white with ice green and silver.
- Megaride F50 ‘Black Lucid Aquamarine’: black with bright aquamarine details.
- F50 Walkable ‘Shock Pink’ (W): vivid pink with green and silver.
What is the difference between the F50 and the SL 72?
Both are sporty retro models from adidas, but from different eras. The adidas SL 72 is a slim, flat 1970s running shoe in nylon and suede. The F50 sneakers take their inspiration from the tech look of the 2000s: more volume, mesh and plastic. If you want a thick sole with a retro running feel, the XLG Runner Deluxe is also an option; for a football background in a low, simple shape there is the adidas Samba.
How does the adidas F50 fit?
According to adidas, the Megaride F50 fits true to size, so you can order your usual adidas size. Buyers with wider feet report that the width is comfortable, and the sole becomes more supple after a short break-in period. For the other F50 variants, such as the Walkable and Ghost Sprint, the fit can differ; so also check the size tip on the product page.
