Spizike
The Jordan Spizike is a tribute to director Spike Lee and his bond with Michael Jordan, cast into one hybrid sneaker. The name combines ‘Spike’ and ‘Mike’, and the design borrows parts from several Air Jordan classics. Today the focus is mainly on the Spizike Low, a low version that is easy to wear every day.
The history of the Jordan Spizike
In the late 80s Spike Lee played his film character Mars Blackmon in the Jordan commercials, becoming one of the faces of the brand. As a thank-you, Jordan Brand released the Spizike in October 2006. The first run was small and numbered, but demand soon led to new colours.
For a few years now there has also been a low Spizike. The Low keeps the familiar elements but sits below the ankle, which makes it far more accessible. Colourway names regularly refer to Lee, such as the version named after his 1989 film ‘Do the Right Thing’.
Design: a mix of Jordan classics
Almost every part of the Spizike comes from an earlier model. The sole and elephant print are taken from the Air Jordan 3, the lacing with loops from the Air Jordan 4, and the see-through netting on the side from the Air Jordan 5. The 6, 9 and 20 contributed details too. The result is a sturdy shoe of leather, nubuck and mesh with visible Air in the heel.
Popular Spizike colorways
These Spizike Lows are viewed most often on WOOVIN right now:
- Spizike Low ‘Black Cement’ – black with grey, white and red, in the colours of a well-known Jordan 3.
- Spizike Low ‘Black Cat’ – black and anthracite from top to bottom.
- Spizike Low ‘Lightning’ – bright yellow with black and grey.
- Spizike Low ‘Sanddrift’ – sand colour with white and light grey.
- Spizike Low SE ‘Do the Right Thing’ – white with black, off-white and red.
Spizike or a real Air Jordan 4: which do you choose?
Put the Spizike next to a Jordan 4 and you immediately see the family resemblance. Still, the Spizike is not a numbered signature model: it is a collage, with a bulkier build and more different materials on one shoe. The Jordan 4 has its own fixed shape and a long history of original colours. Choose the Spizike if you want several Jordan details in one pair; choose the 4 if you prefer to wear one classic silhouette.
How does the Jordan Spizike fit?
According to retailers and most wearers, the Spizike Low is true to size, so your usual Nike size is a good starting point. The layered upper feels fairly stiff when new and can press a little on the outside of the forefoot. With wide feet, half a size up is therefore worth considering; after some wear the material becomes more supple.
