Timberland
Timberland is an American footwear brand from New Hampshire, known worldwide for the waterproof boot in wheat-coloured nubuck. That 6-inch boot started out as a work and outdoor shoe and later became a fixture of streetwear and hip-hop. Today women, men and kids wear Timberland boots, especially in autumn and winter.
The history of Timberland
The story goes back to the Abington Shoe Company in Boston. Shoemaker Nathan Swartz bought a stake in the business in 1952, and he and his sons later took over the whole company. In the 1960s the family started using injection moulding, a technique that bonds the sole directly to the upper without stitching. That made it possible to build truly waterproof boots.
In 1973 the company launched the first boot under the name Timberland; according to the brand itself, that was an 8-inch model. The 6-inch version followed three years later and grew into the boot everyone knows today. The name proved so successful that the company adopted it as its own. Since 2011 Timberland has been part of the American VF Corporation, with its head office in Stratham, New Hampshire.
In the 1990s the boot moved from building sites and forests to the streets of New York. Hip-hop artists wore it as part of their everyday look, and that link with music and streetwear has remained ever since.
What Timberland is known for
The heart of the brand is the 6-inch Premium Waterproof Boot. It has a waterproof nubuck upper with seam-sealed construction, a padded collar around the ankle and a rubber lug sole with a deep tread. The wheat colour is so recognisable that many people simply call it the Yellow Boot.
Besides boots, Timberland makes boat shoes, hiking shoes and clothing. The brand also regularly teams up with labels and designers who use the 6-inch boot as a canvas. Supreme is the best-known partner and has given the boot its own versions several times; sneaker fans know the New York label mainly from Supreme x Nike.
Popular Timberland models
On WOOVIN the Timberland range currently centres entirely on the 6-inch boot, in several versions:
- The 6-inch Premium Waterproof Boot in Wheat: the classic yellow nubuck version, for men and in women’s sizes.
- The 6-inch Premium Boot in Black Nubuck: the same boot in black, easier to combine with dark outfits.
- Supreme x MM6 Maison Margiela: a three-way collaboration from 2026 in which the whole boot is covered in a printed pattern of $100 bills, finished with gold-coloured hardware.
- Supreme Black: a black edition with Supreme branding.
- Kids’ sizes: the Wheat and Black boots are also available for children.
Looking for a softer winter shoe? Then UGG is a logical alternative, with sheepskin boots and slippers. For technical outdoor footwear with a sneaker look, Salomon is worth a look.
How do Timberland boots fit?
Timberland boots are known to run large. For the 6-inch boot, Timberland itself and many retailers advise going half a size down from your usual size. If you have wide feet or want to wear the boot with thick winter socks, your own size may be more comfortable. Versions with (W) in the name follow the women’s size chart.
