UGG

UGG is the brand behind the world’s best-known sheepskin boots, but also behind popular slippers and sneakers such as the Tasman, Tazz and Lowmel. The brand stands for warm, soft footwear that you can wear just as easily at home as on the street. Especially in autumn and winter you see UGG everywhere, on women, men and kids.

The history of UGG

The story starts in 1978, when Australian surfer Brian Smith travelled to Southern California with a bag full of sheepskin boots. Surfers wore them to keep their feet warm after a session in cold water, and at first the boots were sold mainly in surf shops along the coast. Ski shops soon followed, because the boots worked just as well in the snow.

In 1995 the American footwear company Deckers acquired the brand. Around the turn of the millennium, well-known American celebrities were seen in UGG boots, and that turned UGG into a fashion brand. Since then the range has grown to include slippers, sneakers and boots on platform soles.

What is UGG known for?

The heart of UGG is twinface: sheepskin with suede on one side and wool on the other. That wool keeps your feet warm, feels soft and moulds to your foot over time. In many newer models UGG also uses UGGplush, a lining made from repurposed wool and lyocell. On the outside you mostly see suede in shades such as Chestnut, Sand and Black.

Another UGG signature is the Tasman braid: a woven, colourful band around the opening of the slippers. That single detail makes models such as the Tasman and the Tazz recognisable from a distance.

Popular UGG models

  • The UGG Tasman is a low suede slipper with a wool lining and the well-known braid. You wear it as a house slipper, but also simply outdoors.
  • The UGG Tazz is the Tasman on a platform sole, for anyone who wants a little extra height and a bolder silhouette.
  • The UGG Lowmel is a lace-up suede sneaker with a soft lining, for anyone who wants UGG comfort in the shape of a sneaker.

The Classic boot, in short, tall and Mini versions, remains the model that made the brand big in the first place. The Ultra Mini, an extra-low version on a platform sole, has also become a staple in recent years.

How do UGG shoes fit?

The fit differs per model, so always check the advice on the model page. The Classic boots run large: if you are between two sizes, choose the smaller one, because the wool gives a little after a few wears. Slippers such as the Tasman and Tazz broadly fit true to size and are only made in whole sizes. The Lowmel fits true to size, with a lining that feels a little snug for the first few days.

If you like to wear your UGGs with thick socks or have wide feet, keep that in mind when choosing your size. Many people actually wear their UGGs without socks, because that is when the wool works best.
