991

The New Balance 991 is the British member of the 99X series: a premium runner made in England and recognisable by its Made in UK label. With pigskin suede, mesh and a sturdy, well-cushioned sole, it is loved by fans who value craftsmanship. You mostly see the 991 in muted tones and in sought-after collaborations, for women and men.

The history of the New Balance 991

New Balance released the 991 in 2001 as a successor within the series that began with the 990. Whereas the 990 is made in the United States, the 991 came from the brand’s British factory in Flimby, in the north-west of England. That made it one of the best-known models of the Made in UK line.

The model built a loyal following, helped by its many special editions and anniversary releases from the British factory. Later came the 991v2, with a more modern sole and a sleeker upper. The original version has since also been referred to as the 991v1.

Design and technology

The upper combines pigskin suede with mesh, with reflective details and a large N on the side. The first 991 has ENCAP in the midsole: a soft foam core inside a firmer rim, complemented by ABZORB cushioning.

The 991v2 has a midsole with FuelCell foam, ENCAP and semi-translucent ABZORB SBS pods in the heel. It looks slimmer and sportier than the original, but keeps the calm character the 99X series is known for. The tongue label of the New Balance 9060 is also inspired by the 991.

Small runs and collaborations play a big role with the 991, including one with the Italian label Stone Island. These pairs are currently the most sought after on WOOVIN:

What is the difference between the New Balance 991 and the 990?

Both models belong to the 99X series, but they come from different factories. The New Balance 990v4 and the other 990 versions are made in the United States; the 991 in England. In design, the 991 is a little lower and more compact, while the 990 looks fuller around the midfoot.

How does the New Balance 991 fit?

The New Balance 991 fits true to size, so you can order your usual New Balance size. The suede gives a little after a few wears and the shoe closes well around the heel. If you have wide feet, consider half a size up; with narrow feet, stick with your own size.

On WOOVIN you will find the 991v1 and the 991v2, mainly in Made in UK versions and collaborations. Because many pairs come out in small runs, availability varies by size; check the product name to see whether it is a v1 or v2. If in doubt, choose the v1 for the classic shape and the v2 for a more modern sole.
