Air Jordan 6
The Air Jordan 6 is the sneaker in which Michael Jordan claimed his first NBA title in 1991. Tinker Hatfield worked ideas from the car world into it, the best-known being an upright loop on the heel. Today many people know the Jordan 6 from the Infrared colours and from the versions Air Jordan released with Travis Scott.
The history of the Air Jordan 6
Jordan loved fast cars, and Hatfield took a Porsche as the inspiration for this model. The heel loop, often called the ‘spoiler’ by fans, recalls the rear spoiler of a sports car. Jordan also wanted to get into his shoe more easily; that is why the tongue got two openings and you can pull the shoe on by that heel loop.
In June 1991 the Chicago Bulls beat the Los Angeles Lakers in the Finals, with Jordan wearing the black version with infrared accents. It was the first of six titles. From its predecessor, the Air Jordan 5, the 6 took over the lace lock and the translucent sole.
Design and features
The upper is smooth leather or nubuck, with small perforations instead of large netting panels. A moulded plastic heel piece wraps the back of the foot, and the logo sits on the heel loop. Visible Air is housed in the heel. The result is a tall, sturdy shoe that offers a lot of hold, especially around the heel.
