Air Jordan 9

The Air Jordan 9 is the Jordan that Michael Jordan never wore in an NBA game. When the shoe appeared in 1993, he had just quit basketball and switched to baseball. Tinker Hatfield designed the 9 as a tribute to Jordan’s worldwide fame, and within Air Jordan it is still a sturdy, recognisable high-top.

The history of the Air Jordan 9

In October 1993, after three straight titles with the Chicago Bulls, Jordan announced his retirement. He then played baseball for the Birmingham Barons. That made the 9 the shoe of other players: Penny Hardaway and Mitch Richmond, among others, wore their own versions on court. Jordan himself returned to the NBA in 1995.

Even so, the 9 stayed close to him. The bronze statue of Jordan outside the United Center in Chicago shows him with the 9 on his feet. So it was precisely the shoe he never wore in a game that earned a lasting place in his story.

Design and technology

The most striking detail sits under the shoe: the outsole carries words in several languages, including Japanese, German, French and Spanish, as a nod to Jordan’s fans around the world. Above it is a tall leather or nubuck upper with a heavily padded collar, which makes the 9 feel almost like a boot. Besides the high version there is a 9 Low, and Jordan Brand also makes golf shoes based on it.

Air Jordan 9 or Air Jordan 11: which one suits you?

The 9 is a robust high-top with lots of leather and an almost boot-like feel. The Air Jordan 11, which Jordan wore after his return, is sleeker thanks to patent leather and mesh. If you want something more colourful from the same period, the Air Jordan 7 is the obvious alternative; for a heavy leather Jordan, look at the Air Jordan 12.

How does the Air Jordan 9 fit?

According to most retailers, the Air Jordan 9 fits true to size, so you order your normal Nike size. The tall, padded upper fits closely, a little like a boot, and is on the narrow side. If you have wide feet or like a bit more room, take half a size up. Most sources advise against going a size down.

On WOOVIN you will find the 9 as a high retro and as a Low Golf. Mind the difference: the golf versions have an outsole made for the golf course, the retros a classic basketball sole. If you mainly want to wear it in the city, pick a high retro in grey or in a dark shade such as Olive.
