Climacool

The adidas Climacool is a range of sneakers built around one idea: as much air around your foot as possible. The name started as a ventilation technology in running shoes from adidas and now stands for both the retro Climacool 1 and a 3D-printed shoe with an open lattice structure. That makes it one of the few models that is nostalgic and futuristic at the same time.

The history of the adidas Climacool

adidas introduced Climacool in 2002 as a technology to keep feet cool and dry, with ventilation all around the foot. The first shoe to launch with it was the Climacool 1, a runner with lots of mesh and openings for airflow. It returned a few times later, most recently in the past few years, in original and new colours.

In 2025 adidas gave the name a completely different meaning with a 3D-printed Climacool: a slip-on whose upper and sole form a single lattice. A laced version, the Climacool Laced, followed shortly after.

Design: from mesh to 3D print

  • Climacool 1: a mesh upper with synthetic reinforcements at the toe and midfoot, and a sporty sole in early-2000s style.
  • 3D-printed Climacool: an open structure printed in one piece, so air can flow through the shoe from every side. The Laced version adds laces and a separate tongue for a more secure fit.
  • Climacool 2: a newer variant in the same technical, sporty style.

Climacool 1 or the printed Climacool?

You wear the Climacool 1 like a regular sneaker, with laces, a tongue and a familiar shape. The printed version looks more like an object and feels airier, but it stands out more. If you like the technical look of the 2000s, also take a look at the adidas F50 and the adidas ZX. If you are after a slim retro runner instead, the adidas SL 72 suits you better.

How does the adidas Climacool fit?

According to adidas, the Climacool 1 fits true to size, so you can stick with your usual adidas size. With narrow or regular feet that works well; if you have wide feet, half a size up gives a little more room. On the 3D-printed Climacool the shape is fixed by the print, so check the size chart on the product page for that one.
