The history of the Puma LaMelo Ball
LaMelo Ball signed with Puma in 2020, shortly before entering the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets. A year later he was named Rookie of the Year. His first own shoe, the MB.01, followed in 2021: the first signature model from Puma Hoops since the brand returned to basketball in 2018.
Ball helped design it himself. Since then the series has had a successor roughly every year, from the MB.02 and MB.03 up to the MB.05. Besides these basketball shoes, Puma has also released lifestyle models under his name, such as the LaFrancé.
Design and technology
Recognisable features are the words ‘Not From Here’ on the tongue and ‘Rare’ on the outsole, two phrases Ball uses often. On the MB.01, flames run down from the ankle collar, and some versions have a left and right shoe in different colours.
The midsole contains Puma’s Nitro foam: light and responsive, designed for quick movements. The upper is made of breathable mesh with printed details, and the rubber outsole provides grip on short cuts. Several models have also appeared as a Lo version, with a lower cut.
