XT-6

The Salomon XT-6 is an ultramarathon trail running shoe that grew into one of the best-known sneakers of the outdoor look. Its quick lacing, layered upper and aggressive tread give it a technical look, and it wears that way too. You are just as likely to see the XT-6 on mountain trails as in the city.

The history of the Salomon XT-6

The XT-6 appeared in 2013 as an S/LAB model, created by the team at Salomon that develops shoes for the brand’s own elite runners. It was intended for ultra runners such as Kilian Jornet and François D’haene, who cover long distances in the mountains. Stability and protection were the priorities.

In 2018 Salomon re-released the XT-6 in its Sportstyle line, now also aimed at people who wear it away from running. Collaborations with labels such as Palace and Kith followed. With the rise of gorpcore around 2020, the XT-6 became a fashion staple.

Design and technology

The upper is mesh with thin, welded overlays that keep the foot in place. You pull the Quicklace cord tight with one hand, then tuck the end into a pocket on the tongue. Inside, a SensiFit construction wraps the midfoot.

The dual-density EVA midsole combines cushioning with stability, supported by a stabilising chassis around the heel. The Contagrip outsole has deep lugs for grip on mud and rock. Some versions also feature a Gore-Tex membrane to keep out the wet.

From all black to warm earth tones, these XT-6 pairs are currently the most popular on WOOVIN:

What is the difference between the XT-6 and a retro runner?

Retro running shoes such as the ASICS GEL-1130 and the Saucony ProGrid Omni 9 are made for the road, with regular laces and a flatter tread. The XT-6 comes from trail running: it hugs the foot more closely, has quick lacing and a sole that grips on loose ground. That makes it look more technical and rugged.

How does the Salomon XT-6 fit?

The Salomon XT-6 fits true to size in length, but it wraps the foot closely, especially around the toes. That snug fit is meant to give control on technical terrain. With narrow or regular feet, order your usual size. If you have wide feet, go half a size up so your toes do not press against the front.

Buying the Salomon XT-6 at WOOVIN

At WOOVIN you will find the XT-6 in many colours, with and without Gore-Tex, as well as the S/LAB XT-6 Advanced. Go for a Gore-Tex version if you wear it in autumn and winter, and an earth tone if you mostly pair it with casual clothes. When choosing, think about the width of your feet, as that is where the XT-6 makes the biggest difference.
