The ASICS Gel-1130 is a retro runner from ASICS that first appeared in 2008 as an affordable running shoe with added stability. Since its reissue in 2021 it has become a fixture in the brand’s lifestyle range, thanks to its silver accents, layered mesh and technical late-2000s look. Women and men wear it just as easily with wide-leg jeans as with a skirt.
The history of the ASICS Gel-1130
The Gel-1130 was the ninth model in the GEL-1000 series, ASICS’s entry-level line for runners who wanted some support without paying for a flagship. Its design borrowed heavily from the pricier Gel-Kayano 14 of the same year, but with less GEL in the sole. After a few seasons the model disappeared from stores.
When the Gel-Kayano 14 made a successful comeback, ASICS brought back the Gel-1130 as well in 2021. A collaboration with designer Kiko Kostadinov that same year put the model on the fashion world’s radar. Since then, new colours have followed one another quickly.
Design and technology
The upper combines breathable mesh with synthetic overlays and metallic lines that run from the toe to the heel. The heel holds GEL cushioning, and under the midfoot sits the TRUSSTIC system: a rigid element that keeps the sole stable as your foot rolls through. The midsole is fairly tall, so the shoe stays comfortable even after a long day on your feet.

Frequently chosen versions are the Gel-1130 ‘Neon Pack Pink’ with bright pink accents and the ‘White Pure Silver’, white mesh with silver stripes. The ‘White Clay Canyon’ looks softer with warm, earthy details, while the ‘White Black’ has a crisp black-and-white contrast.
What is the difference between the Gel-1130 and the Gel-Kayano 14?
Both models date from 2008 and look very similar, but the Kayano 14 was the flagship at the time. It has more GEL, a taller sole and a busier upper with more overlays.
