The history of the ASICS Gel-NYC
The Gel-NYC debuted in a collaboration with Awake NY, Angelo Baque’s New York label, which the name also refers to. The first general releases reached stores shortly after. Unlike the Gel-Kayano 14 or the Gel-1130, it is not a reissue but a new design built from archive material. ASICS has since also released a Gel-NYC 2.0.
Design: three classics in one shoe
According to ASICS itself, the upper is based on the Gel-Nimbus 3 from the early 2000s, combined with details from the Gel-MC Plus V. The sole comes from the Gel-Cumulus 16, a more modern running shoe. The result is a layered upper of mesh and synthetic overlays on a thick, soft sole with GEL cushioning.
It looks less pointed than many other retro runners. The toe is rounder and the sole wider, giving the Gel-NYC a slightly sturdier, casual look. That makes it work well with loose-fitting trousers or cargos, and you can wear it to the office just as easily as at the weekend.

What is the difference between the Gel-NYC and the Gel-1130?
The Gel-1130 is a reissue of a 2008 runner and has a slimmer shape with eye-catching metallic lines. The Gel-NYC is a new design with a rounder toe, a thicker sole and more soft, layered colour blocks. If you like a New Balance-style look, the Gel-NYC is often a good alternative to a New Balance 2002R.
