Air Pegasus

The Nike Air Pegasus is one of the longest-running running shoes from Nike: the model has existed since 1983 and gets a new version almost every year. On WOOVIN the focus is on the Pegasus Premium, a striking version with a visible Air Zoom unit. That makes the Pegasus not just a training shoe, but also a sneaker with a technical look.

The history of the Nike Air Pegasus

Nike released the Air Pegasus in 1983 as a versatile training shoe with Air in the sole. The name refers to the winged horse from Greek mythology. Since then the Pegasus has grown into the workhorse of Nike’s running range: a shoe for daily training that is refined with every new version. The Pegasus 40, the fortieth version of the model, arrived in 2023.

In early 2025 Nike added the Pegasus Premium. Where the regular Pegasus is above all a dependable all-rounder, the Premium shows off what Nike can do with cushioning technology.

Design and technology of the Pegasus Premium

The Pegasus Premium stacks three layers of cushioning. On top sits ZoomX foam, the light, springy foam Nike also uses in its racing shoes. Below that is a sculpted Air Zoom unit you can see on the side of the sole, with ReactX foam at the bottom. Together they give a soft yet bouncy feel with every step.

The upper is light and breathable, with a streamlined, sporty shape. That means the shoe also works with an outfit away from training, especially in calm grey and black tones.

What is the difference between the Pegasus and the Vomero?

Both are cushioned Nike running shoes for daily miles. The Pegasus is the all-rounder, suitable for both easy and faster sessions. The Nike Vomero puts the emphasis on maximum cushioning and comfort, and as the retro Vomero 5 it is mainly popular as a lifestyle sneaker. If you want a runner with a retro look, also check out the Nike P-6000, which is derived from older Pegasus models, or the visible Air of the Nike Air Max.

How does the Nike Air Pegasus fit?

According to most testers, the Pegasus Premium fits true to size, so you can stick with your usual Nike size. The fit is narrow, though, especially around the forefoot and big toe, and the heel counter is firm. If you have wide feet, ideally try a pair on first or choose a roomier model: half a size up does not automatically make a narrow shoe wider.

On WOOVIN you will mainly find the Pegasus Premium in a range of colours, from understated grey and black to the bright collaboration with Melitta Baumeister. Choose a dark version if you wear it in the city every day, and a bright colour if the shoe can be the centrepiece of your outfit. With wide feet, pay extra attention to the fit.
